Nassarawa FC of Lafia yesterday defeated reigning Glo Premier League champions Enyimba FC of Aba 2-1 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on the second match-day of the on-going NPFL Super 4 tourney.
The three goals, scored in the second half of the feisty encounter, saw the Lafia-based side take the lead via a penalty, after Enyimba’s defender, Ifeanyi Anaemena, was handed a red card for hacking down Nasarawa United’s Tayo Fabiyi. It was his second booking for the evening.
Seun Segbeson walked up, sold Femi Thomas a dummy and converted the ensuing penalty in the 61st minute.
However, Enyimba, far from deflated, took the fight to their foes in the 63rd minute, when Christian Pyagbara, latched on to Mfon Udoh’s cross, slipped betwwen two sleepy Nasarawa defenders and jabbed the ball home to claim one back for the champions.
But Nasarawa had the last laugh, when danger man, Tayo Fabiyi, found his way between Chinedu Udoji and another defender to fire into the top right corner of Enyimba’s goal in the 89th minute.
Daniel Etoh wasted a chance to draw his side level in the 91st minute, when, rather than shoot into goal, he shot into the stands.
Peter Onyekachi came on to make things better, but, again, wasted the chance for the champions to draw level, when he missed another sitter, in the 93rd minute.
Nassarawa however had the last laugh as a defensive mixup in the Enyomba back line at the dying minutes of the encounter saw them secure the three maximum points while all efforts by the league champions to secure an equalizer proved abortive.
Nassarawa, now having eight points, sit atop of the log, after five games and will now face Warri Wolves and Akwa United, respectively, on match-day six, tomorrow.
It would be recalled that the league champions had earlier lost to Nassarawa during the first round of the Super 4 played at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna, last week.
